The Moon and Us
Human mating, human survival, and the female menstrual cycle are directly connected to the moon. 29.5 days is exactly the time it takes for the moon to pass through its phases as seen from the earth. The only primate with an exact 29.5 day cycle is the human. Tens of thousands of years ago, when our ancestors roamed the earth as hunter gatherers, the moon acted as a vital clock, governing the rhythm of their lives and becoming a powerful ally to women.
To promote the development of the species, females synchronized their menstrual cycles with one another and in exact phase with the moon, thereby propagating the human race. Synchronized menstrual cycles helped women to prevent one dominant male from impregnating and abandoning all of them. It was a collective tactic to maximize the number of fathers and providers for the benefit of their progeny. The logic human females followed, perhaps, was that if males are useful things to have, everyone should have at least one of them!
For centuries the moon has been associated with evil afoot at night, with witchcraft, werewolves and madness. The very word "lunacy" in which you have lost your mind, is derived from the Latin 'luna', for moon, and is linked to the idea that you in some ways synchronize your thoughts to those of the moon.
The face of the full moon is linked to love in Chinese mythology. Ye Lao, the old man in the moon, is said to bind soul mates destined to marry with an invisible red string. Those convinced that the full moon stimulates romance will be interested to know that it's a proven aphrodisiac under water. Australian and Israeli scientists recently demonstrated that the annual mass spawning of the coral in the Great Barrier Reef is triggered by the faint blue light of the full moon.
*Greek and Roman mythology are not often easy to navigate, but some things regarding how the Moon was characterized do seem clear. At first, there was Selene, a name related to a Greek word for light. This deity, a goddess, was known as Luna among the Romans. She's been depicted as wearing a half-moon on her head, riding across the sky in a silver chariot pulled by either horses or oxen. Sometimes, they portrayed her in robes, riding either a horse or a bull, with a torch in her hand. Selene or Luna were generally considered to be "the Moon" than merely a goddess from my understanding. Eventually Artemis, the Greek goddess of the hunt, came to replace Selene as the goddess associated with the Moon. She was the twin sister of Apollo who became associated with the sun, thus showing a relationship between Sun and Moon that the ancients must have recognized. In Roman mythology, Artemis was known as Diana, but had essentially the same features as Artemis. Both goddesses were highly popular in their respective pantheons.
*Astrological moon signs (or "signs of the Zodiac") are just as important as Sun signs. Moon signs are the next most important planetary placement in a person's horoscope chart and is the moving cycle in the chart that helps define our emotions and make up the unconscious side of our personality. This is the place where we go to find comfort, peace and childhood memories. These signs also have an affect on our senses, such as sight, smell, taste, hearing and touch. They are all connected to our subconscious memories and affect us differently than the Sun's Zodiac signs.
The importance of one's Moon Sign is universal. We believe almost everyone would agree that the Moon is very important. The love affair with the Moon has been in our human psyches since the beginning of time. The Moon's mysterious~ness has also baffled many throughout the ages. What is the magnetism? What is the pull to the Moon? Well, who really knows, all we know is there is a beauty and mystifying energy surrounding her. Some cultures refer to her as the feminine aspect and the Sun as the male aspect, what do you "feel" is true? We may never understand the power of the Moon, yet we will never deny her strength and passion. The way she can affect us emotionally. Respect and love, how we nurture and are nurtured. Knowing our Moon sign is very important and will show us the way to our hearts and to the hearts of others. Compatibility, it is the way to discover how, who and why we love the way we do. The twelve Zodiac moon signs can be divided into four groups: air, fire, earth and water.
Air - Gemini, Libra and Aquarius
The ways in which the astrological moon signs deal with the emotions. The airy Moons.
Gemini Moons are said to be one of the least emotional signs. The Moon is not entirely comfortable here since the Moon is all about emotions. Gemini Moons are often out of touch with their feelings completely for long periods of time. They do have the ability to speak for the psyche of humanity, being the storyteller for the world. Now that could be helpful. The world needs the storytellers.
Libra Moons can please and appease. The need to be part of a couple is a deep driving compulsion. They will sacrifice to keep what they believe, is the perfect partnership. People born under this astrological moon sign have a deep feeling to be accepted. They are motivated by harmony, peace, balance and fairness. But at what cost? Libra's talent for togetherness can be, in the end, the gift that binds people together.
Aquarius Moon tends to think first, then verbalize to come to a good understanding. This Moon is emotional, illogical, and irrational at times. Do you relate and aspire to having an amazing, ingenious imagination, or do you become a scattered rebel, trying to change everyone else before you are fit to be an example of how to think and feel?
Fire - Aries, Leo and Sagittarius
Aries, Leo and Sagittarius have their own way of reacting to their feelings when the moon is in the fire sign.
Aries Moons are very self assured sure of their own actions. They can be competitive at heart. They are also honest and straightforward. Yes, their anger can create lasting wounds in others, so they should be aware of this. They need friends and lovers who will be honest with them. They have an emotional integrity our society needs in these times.
For Leo Moons, they make those under this sign attention seekers that tend to dramatize, but they are very deeply passionate when expressing emotion. Leo Moon is more easily hurt than any other Leo placement. Leo Moons wear their hearts on their sleeves. Leo Moon secretly wishes to be taken care of, they need to remember to shine that sunny energy through the Moon.
For Sagittarian Moons, their astrology moon sign tends to make them move around and explore. They also tend to take their own feelings and apply them to religion. Fight or flight will be the response if any ONE tries to tie them down. Emotion will win with this Sag Moon over logic every time. This Moon sign needs to run free, as long as their are no chains (real or imagined) they will find their way back to you.
Earth - Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn
The Zodiac signs of Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn go through different emotions.
Taurus Moons will try to defuse unwelcome situations because they like calm. They are generally emotionally stable beings. They tend to take any emotional upsets slowly and not are not impulsive in their reactions. In other words, they are hard to get a rise out of. If you threaten their home, family or comforts, well, watch out!
Virgo Moons are organizers; they prefer to know the details when it comes to those they love. Love is bound up with duty. To them, duty can be a service to take on joyfully. The deed that you work hard to accomplish is worth far more, as a personal achievement and as a gift to another, than the one that arises easily and spontaneously.
Capricorn Moons tend to control emotions. They tend to keep their feelings to themselves, making this the most complicated Moon sign of all. Reserved? Yes, but when you have finally earned their trust, you will value it more. Distant? Yes, but distance allows others the space in which to grow. Materialistic, yes but we need to remember we live in this world of material.
Water - Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces
For the astrological moon signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces emotional expression becomes a must.
Cancer is the ruler of the Moon, in its own sign it flows freely with no interference, giving these lunar beings an intuitiveness unlike any of the other moon signs. They are the caretakers and nurturers and also want to be nurtured and cared for. Their free expression of emotions becomes extremely important. A Cancer motto~If one wants to be loved, one better know how to be lovable.
Scorpio Moon can hold resentment for a lifetime if their emotions are not released. They find people fascinating. They are the most emotionally intense sign and with the Moon representing emotions, they will have a permanent moodiness to their personality. It is a Moon full of transformation. With death and rebirth a constant theme throughout their lives.
Pisces Moon has a caring and tenderness and helps other people in need. This Moon sign is the keeper of dreams and the unconscious. Pisces Moons have an emotional nature that is wide open and oversensitive to the moods of others. They can lose themselves in others feelings and thoughts and need to know what is truly theirs and what is not. This can be a blessing or a curse, only they can decide which it will be.
In Western Astrology, the Moon is tied to many things. Whereas the Sun is associated with fatherhood and the father figure in one's life, the Moon is connected to all things maternal. Depending upon the sign and house that the Moon resides in within a person's natal chart will often describe their relationship to their mother and for women, how they will tend to mother their own children. In fact, astrology (even Chinese astrology) finds the Moon to be strongly tied to all things in the feminine domain. It's thought that this association came about because the length of time it takes the Moon to travel through the zodiac is the same as the length of a typical menstrual cycle. From this came the association of the Moon with both the ovaries and the breasts.
Intuition, or unconscious knowledge, falls into the realm of the Moon, as well. Things we tend to feel, instinctively know or suspect without a seeming reason, those things are the Moon's effect in a natal chart. In the same way that the Moon's gravity effects the tides on Earth, so the Moon is said to hold sway over the personal rhythms and shifts of mood in individuals.
Not surprisingly, the Moon also came to represent the 'inner child' in each of us. More specifically, our emotional vulnerabilities and receptivity. Just as the Sun shows more of who we're aiming to be, the Moon tends to reflect who we were. It connects to memories, especially memories of childhood, the home environment, our mothers and how we were nurtured.
The Moon rules the fourth sign of the zodiac, Cancer, as well.
